Prof. Joseph Kwabena Amoako is an Associate Professor of Health Physics at the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences, University of Ghana. He previously served as Deputy Director and Chief Research Scientist at the Radiation Protection Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. He holds a PhD in Radiation Physics from the University of Cape Coast, an MPhil in Solid State Physics from the University of Ghana, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Radiation Protection from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
With over 25 years of experience, Prof. Amoako specializes in radiation protection, safety assessment, and solid-state physics. He has served as the project counterpart for several International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)-supported initiatives—RAF9054, RAF9057, and RAF9068—aimed at strengthening occupational radiation protection infrastructure in Africa. He has also worked as an IAEA expert in countries including Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria.
Prof. Amoako is the first African elected to the Executive Council of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) for the 2021–2024 term. A founding member and former Vice President of the Ghana Association for Radiation Protection (GARP), he has also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the African ALARA Network (AFAN).
He played a key role in drafting national guidelines on non-ionising radiation and continues to train professionals in RF radiation monitoring. Passionate about education and policy, Prof. Amoako has supervised numerous graduate students, contributed to national and international radiation safety initiatives, and authored several peer-reviewed publications.
